Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) on the patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis.

Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis who suffered from symptoms not relieved by rest and medications and were able to be evaluated for at least 6 months were enlisted in this study. The amount of 3 cc of PRP obtained from 40 cc of the whole blood was injected into the area of lateral epicondyle and the attachment site of the common extensor tendon using the peppering technique of 5 divided doses. Ten patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis treated by rest and medication only were considered as the control in this study. Modified Mayo Elbow Scores and Visual Analog Pain Score (VAS) were evaluated at 4 weeks, 12 weeks and 24 weeks after the treatment.

Results: Twelve weeks after the treatment, the patient with PRP injection noted 54.4% and 50.7% improvements in their VAS and Mayo scores respectively versus 26% and 22.75% improvements in control patients. At twenty four weeks after the treatment, the patient with PRP injection noted 66.4% and 57.6%improvements in their VAS and Mayo scores respectively versus 29.9% and 23.8% improvements in control patients. There was significant improvement of VAS and Mayo scores in the group with PRP injection compared with the control group at 12 weeks (P<0.001) and 24 weeks (P<0.001)

Conclusion: Treating the patients with chronic lateral epicondylitis using PRP injection could reduce symptoms and should be considered as an effective modality before surgical intervention if medication or other conservative measures are not effective.
